Chapters 14 & 15
There are many different thing that people can do to stay safe when it comes to personal safety and injury prevention. I knew a lot about these things because we talk about this stuff all through are childhood and a taught to look out for these things in school. Staying out of trouble is something people tell us everyday and when we are kids we don't think much of it till it happens to us or a loved one. Violence is a huge factor when it comes to staying safe because you can walk into a situation and it just be a wrong place wrong time type of thing. The internet is where a lot of violence happens and I learned that reading this chapter and peoples experiences in the discussions.
Ageing is something we can not change as much as we want to. This chapter really opened my eyes for the need to stay healthy and keep your body strong. Aging takes a toll on your bod and your wallet without the right type of healthcare. The need for physical activity is a must and I am surprised at how many aging people do not exercise. I looked up some information on this and realized that almost all the older people that I know really do not have much physical activity. Avoiding things like tobacco and things that can put a toll on the body is a must because there is only so much you can do when its too late and your body cant take the stress your putting on it anymore.
For environmental health, I make my parents or family members only smoke in designated areas, and I do recycle if that is what this question means. I do drink bottled water because I do live in the love canal and the taste of the water is different and ever scene I was a child. I do make sure I recycle as much as I can.
I learned many different things in this lesson that I can use in the future, but the one thing that stuck out to me the most is the relationship abuse because that is what my mother went through and I watched it. I like to be aware of the things around me and the information for that will always stick with me.
In this course the discussion posts is what impacted me the most. I liked reading about others struggles and to see how they overcame it and learned form the things that happened to them as well as sharing my stories.
I did not really like these learning journals at first, but now I realize that they help me to understand more of the information, but I definitely didn't like the presentation things we watch.

1) Chapters 12 & 13
As I was reading the assigned material for this module, I definitely learned a lot. In chapter 12 it talks a lot about chronic diseases and many of these diseases may have affects our lives to this day in a devastating way. I knew a lot about diabetes because some people in my family have it, but I knew nothing about Gestational Diabetes. Gestational Diabetes develops in 2-10% of pregnant women and those woman have a risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the next 10 to 20 years. The symptoms of detecting diabetes have some that I would have never thought of like hunger and the ability for woman to develop yeast infections. I did know many of the reasons for people developing type 2 diabetes, but I did not think that chronic stress was a factor.
I can honestly say that I did not know much at all about the cardiovascular system and the health aspect of it. I have never herd of Atherosclerosis which is an arterial condition characterized by inflammation, scarring, and the buildup of mealy deposits along the artery walls. I did know that hypertension was high blood pressure and that the long term effects can lead to other forms of cardiovascular diseases and can cause vision loss and kidney disease. Coronary heart disease causes the most deaths in the United States. I did not know almost anything about the different things like Angina, Myocardial Infraction, Arrhythmia and Sudden Cardiac Arrest. After reading this chapter I became very knowledgeable about the information about this. The list of the risks of cardiovascular disease is very long and increased my knowledge of what to look out for and what to try and stay away from.
Cancer is something that affects people in many different ways. There are different risk factors for cancer and some are beyond peoples control. The environment people live in can be a major cause of someone's health. The types of cancer vary and can effect people very differently and some are more common in men than woman and the opposite. Treating cancer is a very hard and painful process for the patient and can change someone's world in a blink of an eye. Changing someone's lifestyle could be the factors that help someone's cancer be cured or just be put into remission. The place you live, the food you eat, your personal choices can help the odds.
When to see a doctor can be more obvious than most things. People should get there regular check ups and going to the different doctors that are required for your health to benefit and to stay as healthy as possible. Health care can be the make or break for people to even go to a doctor because some people need to pay so much and they do not have the money so there conditions get worse. The plans for health insurance can be pretty ridiculous, but different plans can suite different peoples needs.
So how will you be a smarter consumer to help avoid these issues?
There are many different things that people can do to try and prevent these devastating diseases. Eating right, exercising and living in a healthy environment can make a huge difference. I want to try and make my daily life style better and to improve any way that I can, because I know that I do not eat as well as I can and I do not exercise that much and I definitely need to improve. Staying away from smoking and alcohol can help as well and it is a good thing that I don't do either of those things.
I found this website that estimates your 10 year risk of having a heart attack which I found interesting.
I also found this website that gives statistics about cancer and ways to cope with it or even being a loved one who is experiencing someone who has cancer.
2) I have learned many things in this module that I can take with me in the future, but learning about the ways to detect and to learn the risk factors for the diseases is a plus. I will know many different things to look out for and things to stay away from that help me stay healthy.
I would like to improve on my quiz grades, because I have a hard time with them. I will know the information and just get intimidated with the questions and over think everything too much.
To achieve success, I try and understand the text as good as I can and to participate in the discussions to the best of my abilities.
Based on the discussions, I would try and put more information form other sources and to include that in my question background. The discussions are what give me a lot of different information that helps me understand more of the information from the text.

Mod 4
1. In chapters 4,5&6 in our text book there was a lot of information that I learned and gained knowledge of. Nutrition really opened my eyes to the health risks and the food I should and I shouldn't eat. I felt like I knew a lot about nutrition even though I might not have been the best at calculating my own health needs, but I realized I really knew very little. The source of vitamins in different foods was a shocker and the function each type of food help with in your body as a eye opener. I can honestly say that I did not know many things about probiotics and prebiotics and now I do. When it comes to physical activity and fitness, I knew a good amount of information. I used to work out a lot and I realized that I did not know much about the risks and benefits of exercise. Different exercises help with different types of the body and I learned a good amount about that. I found the different ways to take care of injuries caused by exercising as well as how to overcome the obstacles. Body image is a huge aspect of my life that I am self conscious about. I have found that doctors will tell someone they are obese, but that person might not even come close to considering themselves at that point because they do live a healthy lifestyle. The body mass index is something I might not completely agree with because people's bodies are built differently. Obesity is something that I knew a god amount about and focused a lot on in this mod. Obesity can cause many issues in someone's life, but I never thought about the financial burden it can put on someone and their family. The factors that cause weight gain caught my eye because I did not know a lot about them and I gained a good outlook on them.
What can you change in your diet to lead to a healthier life style?
I believe that I can make better choices when it comes to the food I eat and the times that I eat them. I don't eat the healthiest that I could and I have been very interested in changing my diet a good amount to make my daily life healthier and help me stay motivated. I want to want to eat more fruit and vegetables as well as more wholesome meals for dinner so I do not want to have a late night snack.
I have found some websites to go along with these chapters that connect and help describe things very well.
http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/adult.html -this website talks a lot about the statistics of obesity and talks about the obesity rates in adults and children. Tis website also helps with ways to overcome obesity.
http://www.helpguide.org/articles/healthy-eating/nutrition-for-children-and-teens.htm - this website gives a lot of information in the nutrition that children and teens need, as well as good eating habits to start when the kids a young. What I liked about this website is that it gives you reasons why you should limit the salt and sugar consumption in children.
2.I think I need to focus more on retaining the information for the quizzes and not just getting the information I think I need. I have a bad habit of remembering information that is interesting to me rather than the things that I need to know.
My participation in discussions have improved a good amount. I realized that I needed to add more information and not just my opinion in the responses to other peoples posts. I am so used to opinioned discussions that it tends to move with me. I do now find websites that actually give me a lot of information for the chapters.
3.Probiotics- living, beneficial microbes that develop naturally in food and that help maintain digestive functions.
I did not know that probiotics were foods like dairy that have bacteria in them. The bacteria that we eat is good for out body and I did not realize that. The probiotics actually assist your immune system and I did not know that.
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)-The rate that which the body expends energy for only the basic functioning of vital organs.
This has to do with the physical condition of a person and improving it. Regular physical activity can help this and build your muscles.

1.In this module I have learned a lot about drugs, alcohol and smoking that I did not know. When it comes to drug use I learned about the effects of constant use and how it effects the body, as well as the different types if drugs that are used today. I was very interested in the ways the textbook explained how people could get help for whatever drug problem they may have had.
While reading about alcohol and tobacco use, I realized over use if alcohol is more common that I thought. I also became aware of how much a difference alcohol can be depending on the person depending on there sex, age, weight and physical condition. I learned a lot about the effects of second hand smoke, long term effects of smoking and getting help to quit drinking and smoking. I know of a website that helps people identify there problems and have answers to the questions they have. I know people who were alcoholics that would browse the internet about their habits and a friend of mine showed me this page that she has viewed. People want to know that there is hope and this is what this page gives them as well as true experiences of others. This website also talked about smoking rather than just alcohol.

2.I do believe that I did put the needed amount of time and effort needed into this module. I made sure I had the readings done ahead of time so I had the time to focus on the assignments. I did have a few issues with making sure I have the right type of information I needed in the responses for the student seminar, but this module I made sure I had the right information when creating my question. I am not so much uncertain about the things I need to include, but I am flustered when I do comment on someones questions and I post my opinion. I believe that because they gave us the facts about the idea that commenting about the website and our opinion is necessary. Full blown facts on a reply is not what I think should be needed to justify an answer to the question that was asked of us. They ask our opinion and that is what I give.

Mod 2
1. In Mod 2 I have learned a lot about health and ways to stay healthy. I also learned a lot about psychological health. While reading the first chapter, I learned about the differences between health and wellness as well as ways to improve my daily life and help to live a healthier way. I learned how my family history could effect types of sicknesses I could get depending on the circumstances. I like how this chapter talked about The Transtheorical Model of Behavior Change because I am learning about that in other classes. This model can make or break someone's attempt at change or success.
Chapter 2 opened my eyes to more of the psychological issues people could have. While reading about how stress can effect someone's daily life, I think about my mother and how she is on medicine to help with stress because she gets a lot of anxiety and panic attacks. This chapter opened my eyes to all of the different things that could lead up to psychological issues. Before this chapter I did not really think a lot about these illness's and what causes or helps people cope with them. I am nit very interested in them and hope we learn more about select ones.
At the end of perzi part 1, the question was What are some things you could do to stay healthy?
Well, I believe that I could get more regular check ups at the doctor and I could talk to someone about proper nutrition. I need to start eating healthier and exercise more which will help me a lot with staying healthy. I also think I sleep a little too much so I want to start going to bed earlier and maybe start waking up earlier and have a better start to my day.
2. I believe that I put the time and effort into this module because I dedicated select time to focus on the reading and not to just read because I had to. I made sure that I understood what I was learning and if I didn't I would ask myself questions and try and find the answers in the reading. I tried my best on the quiz and was determined to do good. I would advise people to read before the module opens because it is better to focus more on the assignments when the module opens rather than trying to rush and read when things are due soon.
3.Health Literacy: the ability to evaluate and understand health information and to make informed choices or your health care.
-I learned that health literacy could be extremely helpful when trying to understand a diagnosis and how they could effect you or people around you. I also learned that health literacy helps evaluate all the health information that I could look up on the internet or read in books or magazines.
Cue Control: A behavior change technique in which the individual learns to change the stimuli that provoked the lapse.
-I learned that with cue control people could teach themselves when they are more likely to lapse than other times and what types of things to stay away from so you don't lapse.
Health Disparities: Gaps in the rate and burden of disease and the access to and quality of health care among various population groups.
-I learned that health disparities include groups based on characteristics linked to them being discriminated against or excluded.
